| Youth Award - European Young Ambassador Programme 2011-2012
The aim of the scheme, which operates throughout Europe, is to recognise, encourage and support young people who are actively involved in the welfare of the community, supporting the best of our Lions’ ideals. In previous years, candidates have been involved in helping young and older people, disabled, able bodied and disadvantaged and have organised projects in conservation, crime prevention, promoting healthier lifestyles, hospital radio and other initiatives. Last year Leanne O'Driscoll won the District Final for her excellent work in supporting keyhole farming projects in Lesotho Africa and other community projects in Tralee. Leanne went on to represent our District in Dudley Birmingham and has an excellent experience there and made a great circle of friends with similar interests and goals.
In 2009 our own Shane O’Brien from Roscommon Leos Club won the Multiple District Final in Dudley for his work to try to prevent the advance of youth related suicide in his local community. After researching the project with the H.S.E and the Department of Health, Shane worked with Roscommon Leo Club to devise a new magazine, “4U”. With a print run of 3000, it gives key information about mental health issues, awareness and prevention of suicide, together with articles on bullying, drug/alcohol abuse and sexuality, occasional the backdrop to poor mental health. The award is open to individuals of either sex who have reached their 15th birthday but have not yet reached their 19th birthday on 30th June 2012. A bursary of £500 (€587 based on exchange rate of 0.85) is available to the District winner. The bursary can be used for a project of the winner’s choice. The District winner will also receive the Tommy Byrne Perpetual Trophy (to be held for one year) and a replica. The Winner of the Multiple District Final will receive a further Bursary of £1000 towards their chosen project and will subsequently represent the Multiple District of Ireland and the British Isles at the European Final later in the year. The Award Programme provides an excellent opportunity to recognise the contribution made by younger members of our society and it also creates a forum for interaction between Lions Clubs and potential future members, who from a young age demonstrate the qualities and values that each individual Lion and Club strive to nurture and develop for the betterment of our local community.
