Diabetes AwarenessLions, in conjunction with other health care professionals, have carried out Diabetes Screening programmes in Ireland for many years in an effort to detect people with this often hidden condition. Diabetes is the foremost cause of adult blindness and a leading cause of death by disease throughout the world. There are an estimated 200 million people in the world with Diabetes and the number is increasing, particularly in undeveloped countries. Lions screening programmes have identified the condition in thousands of people, thereby giving them the opportunity of gaining the specialist treatment necessary, at an early stage, before further compilications occur due to the condition not being corrected. Research continues worldwide, with funds provided by the Lions Clubs International Foundation, to find the ultimate cure for this disease - to which currently there is no known cure. Most Clubs in our District participate in this project as it fits in very well with out major International Project, Sight First. For information about local Lions screening dates, please contact you nearest Lions Club. When Lions Clubs hold Diabetes Screenings, they are operated by qualified medical personnel at all times and the service is provided completely free of charge. |
