Who are Lions?

How can I become a member?

Lions are Ordinary People doing Amazing Things.

Yes, ordinary people from all walks of life such as Teachers, Grocers, Doctors, Police men and women, Nurses, Van drivers, Solicitors, Plumbers, Clergy, Retired people, Young people who are over the age of eighteen, in fact anyone can become a Lion.

A Lions club generally has twenty to thirty members and they are meant to be representative of a cross-section of the community within which they serve.

Lions are men and women who give of their time voluntarily to humanitarian causes in their Local, National and Global communities.

LOCAL

The amazing things that Lions do starts within their own community and in keeping with our motto We Serve a sample of some projects are –

Service projects – Help to Senior Citizens, Talking Newspapers, Hospital visits etc

Social ---- Christmas party, Sheltered housing, Social dancing…….

Youth projects --- Youth exchange, Youth award, Peace poster, Leos ……..

Medical --- Diabetes screening, Message in a Bottle, CPR training and support….

Environment --- Tree planting, Environment clean up, Printer cartridge recycling

NATIONAL

Lions Holiday Project – Senior citizens from all parts of Ireland who may not have had a holiday opportunity are taken to Trabolgan in Co. Cork for one week’s holiday.

Christmas Food Appeal – Lions from all over Ireland stand outside supermarkets and collect food, which is distributed, to the needy in the week before Christmas each year.

Suicide Awareness – Nationally Lions faciitate training and support to people who are dealing with youth in this very delicate area.

GLOBAL

Campaign Sight First --- $200m was raised globally for the eradication of preventable blindness particularly in third world countries.

Tsunami appeal --- Lions Clubs International was to the forefront in offering relief and long-term support to the victims of this disaster through Lions Clubs in the affected countries.

Networking --- The Lions community world wide has 1.3 million members in more than 200 countries so virtually everywhere there is a Lions Club and Lions who will be only too delighted to offer you or yours a helping hand.

If you have a desire to help with this type of work or if you have a particular project or expertise that you would like to share with your community on a local, national or global stage why not talk to a Lion or a Lions Club in your locality and maybe it will be of mutual benefit.

We are at all times interested in meeting with new potential members and if there is not a Lions Club in your locality then you maybe the catalyst for one.
